The Last Plane Out Of Sydney’s Almost Gone

Friday, February 24th, 2012

I hadn’t heard this song in perhaps 20 years, but got a copy when I was in Australia earlier this year.

It’s so good. So sad. So powerful. It’s about a Vietnam vet who’s not the same after the war and turns to a destructive life, but for me it’s all about memories of going to workers clubs and pubs with friends back in the very late 1980s and early 90’s. Nostalgia I guess. It was always playing, and people would always sing along (especially when drunk). Back in those days I hated the song. Now I love it.

I could listen to it all day.

Here’s a photo of me holding something I got for Christmas from SFL:

It’s a light up Tardis soap! Who made it? Where did she get it? Who knows! It’s small but very detailed. Here’s a close up:

It came in a pack of two with a Dalek (that doesn’t light up any more). An unusual but very cool gift.

Sooo, it must be used! And I’m posting about it today since tomorrow I shall start using it in the shower.

You could almost say that tomorrow this Tardis soap will… dematerialize πŸ˜‰

A Long Time Ago…

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Almost 12 years ago, back in March of 1999, I lined up for hours in the cold to pre-buy tickets for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I was beyond excited. Of course I was a child of the Star Wars era (having been born at the right time) and had been a fan most of my life. In those days – when everyone knew Episode I was coming but no-one had seen it – everyone was enthusiastic. It was going to be one of the biggest and most important films ever.

In those days I was buying Star Wars figures a lot more than I do now. I was avidly collecting them all (or at least trying), which wasn’t too difficult since they had only relatively recently been relaunched and not too many were in stores. Of course fans were excited about the Episode 1 figures that would soon be released, and had marked their calendars for a particular day: May 3, 1999.

That was the “street date” on Episode I merchandise. I was looking forward to buying stuff and was looking forward to that very day. In the week or so previous, I was surprised to find bits and pieces of Episode I merchandise in stores. Such as Darth Maul boxing shorts, or a Darth Maul towel, or an Anakin Skywalker plate. I bought them all. I still have them all πŸ™‚

I even made my first ever TV shopping network purchase: a Darth Maul cookie jar from QVC. I still love this item:

On the evening of May 2 KLS and I lined up outside Toys’R’Us to wait for the midnight launch. I was so excited! When the doors open I surged in with the (sizeable) crown and bought one of almost everything. When I checked out I received a certificate to say I attended, which I still have to this day:

I got even more excited looking at the figures and imagining what the movie would be like. The trailers were out, the ads were on TV and it just looked spectacular. I ate the marketing up, accumulating vast amounts of toys and merchandise, including massive amounts of garbage from the Taco Bell, Pizza Hut (I specifically went to Pizza Hut, a restaurant I dislike, to buy Star Wars merchandise) and Burger King. I collected the Star Wars cans, even going so far as to buy 12 packs of soda I hated and pouring it all down the sink just to get the empty cans. You wouldn’t believe some of the crap I bought, and still have to this day, in many cases still in the packaging. I should dig it out one day and put some of it on the blog. (For example, I have every single item on this page.)

I was buying almost anything with a Star Wars tie-in. I had gone menerk for Episode I!

I’m describing all this to give you an idea of how excited I – at the age of 27 – was to see the film. It was as if 16 years of missing a new Star Wars movie was going to pay off in one go. I just couldn’t wait!

And then, on May 16, Episode I was released…

It would be easy here to insert jokes about how awful the movie was (and is). The crushing disappointment felt by zillions of fans as they watched their childhood destroyed and went straight home to toss their Watto cup-toppers (from the Pepsi promotion) into the garbage.

But you know what? I loved it!

I absolutely loved the film. I probably had tears in my eyes I loved it so much. I loved Jar-Jar and the Neimodians and the battle droids and even little Jake Lloyd as Anakin. I had no problem at all with the plot or the script or the acting. I wasn’t a fool – I knew much of it begged criticism (and deserved it), but I can honestly say that the Star Wars fan in me didn’t care, and I for one was in no way disappointed by Episode I. In fact I went back and saw the film again the very next day, and once again even before it left cinemas. I would even see it a fourth time before Episode II was released. Every time I loved it πŸ™‚

None of the stuff I had bought – including the cup-toppers – ended up in the trash!

aaa

We all know the story, how it became trendy to hate not only Episode I but the prequels as a whole. Yeah yeah; it’s called forgetting why you loved the Star Wars films in the first place. I won’t get into the argument of why the prequels are immune to criticism here, but I will say that Episode I worked for me, and although I (as with most) agree the prequels got better as they continued, for me that meant rising from a high to an even higher high. For those six years I was a Star Wars madman, and the merchandise buying continued at a healthy rate πŸ™‚

Yesterday we went and saw Episode I again in theatres – this time in 3D. For me personally I believe this was the 5th time I’d seen the movie on the big screen, and once again I loved every minute of it. Although my Star Wars fandom had quietened a bit in recent years (says the guy who still watched Clone Wars, buys action figures and SW lego sets), I can’t deny the fact I am still a massive fan and love all the films.

Watching Episode I again after not having seen it for so long made the experience very new. Of course I know the film like the back of my hand, but it was entertaining once again to see how cool Qui-Gon is, or marvel at the (still superb) special effects, or sigh at the dreamy Padme Amidala…

What can I say, I’m an unabashed fanboy of all things Star Wars. It’s no surprise I loved it in 3D, and if you were expecting even a hint of critique I’m sad to say you’ll have to go away disappointed πŸ˜‰

The Fever Dream

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Yesterday morning I headed to school (on a Saturday…) to get some work done. Afterwards I grabbed some quick lunch and then headed over to the game store for the pre-release of the new Magic set, Dark Ascension. In the morning I’d been feeling a little queasy, but I just ignored it.

Now the game store had a large turnout for the event – about 50 players. We were all crammed into an area a bit small for that many of us, and given the average player was an early 20’s guy, you can imagine the smell in the room was a bit unpleasant. Not to worry, I excitedly opened my boosters and formed a white/green/red 40 card deck with a bit of a wolf theme going on. The two cards that would eventually become pivotal were:

Image.ashx ggg

Each of which I had two of in my deck.

I won the first round 2-1, and that one loss was bad playing on my part (I didn’t read one of his cards close enough, and voluntarily killed a creature with undying forgetting it just came back stronger…). I am a fast player, and as I took a seat on a couch to pass the time until round two I noted that I was beginning to feel noticeably ill.

I persisted! I won round 2 handily (2-0) against a player so nervous his hands were shaking. It was a little sad actually. The game was again, very quick, and as it finished and I reported my win the game store employees strolled in with 3 or 4 massive and greasy pizzas for everyone to eat.

The smell was nauseating! As in I had a strong reaction to it almost immediately. Bile rising in my throat, light-headed. I fled the room and went and sat in my car with the window down, trying to feel better in the cold air. It was very apparent something was up, but I wanted to keep playing. This resolve was doubled when the standings were posted after round 2 and I found that with 6 points I was tied for first place so far.

So round 3 begins. I handily defeat my opponent in the first of the three games, but I was dizzy and feeling very, very sick. We start the second game, but all of a sudden I just knew if I stayed any longer I’d be throwing up there in that game store room, so I just had to leave. I went and told the organizers that my opponent beat me 0-2 (he was happy I gave him a free win) and fled.

Driving home I was very dizzy, almost floaty, and fighting not to throw up. I got home and rushed into the shower thinking that would help me feel better, but it had the reverse effect and I had to get out because I legitimately thought I was going to faint. KLS was concerned now; something was definitely up with me. I climbed into bed (still wet from the shower) a bit scared because my arms and feet were numb.

But I was restless, and dealing with an extreme pain in my stomach and ribs. I got up to move out to the living room – encased in blankets and heat pads. But even that walk was too much for me and the next thing I knew I was on all fours throwing up into a large plastic bowl on the kitchen floor.

This would continue for a few hours. Pain, delirium, dizziness and throwing up. What was wrong with me? Food poisoning? I’m not sure, but writing about it now I can honestly say I don’t ever remember being as sick as I was yesterday.

So eventually, about 8pm, I was back in bed in pain and miserable. My throat was swollen from all the vomiting, and my chest was positively aching because the vomiting had been so violent and had repeated so often. I had a slight fever as well, and felt very cold. KLS was there with me (as she was throughout the entire ordeal), sitting in bed next to me, and was therefore a prime witness when I started hallucinating and entered into what can only be described as a Fever Dream.

What happened was, while I was technically asleep, I started rapid-fire talking. Of course I have no recollection of any of this, but to her credit she was so amazed and amused by the things I was saying she started writing them down. And therefore I can present to you the rambling of a fevered, delusional sick man as he lay in bed sweating off an illness last night:

“Why is she short”
“Yeah, she’ll like that… Fuck em all”
“86-5”
“I think I’m closing in on sleep maybe”
“Do you think I’m off the main bit”
“We established that I got the details last week… Please… The details, they can wait.”
“I’m tired… Am I? It’s too long”
“I’m always in the same place? Have you noticed? Is it a push message?”
“Did you put it away? Good good. Are you gonna say a senior?”

KLS says she was typing this stuff as fast as possible, I was just spewing out this garbage while asleep! She had fun with it as well, and sometimes responded to me:

Me: “How many more do I have to catch?”
KLS: “About 12”
Me: “Aw fuck!” (said with great disgust)

The best was the following:

“I think I have to reign it in… Cops cops cops!”

The above is 100% true. I have no recollection whatsoever of saying any of this, but I bet it would have been funny.

Anyway I slept poorly, woke up feeling like a steamroller had run over my body 80 times, and plan on just sitting around like a corpse today hoping I’m better enough to teach tomorrow. I do believe the worst is past, but I’m still cold and dizzy and clearly not 100%. Here’s hoping I feel better soon πŸ™

I’m so tired! Today was the penultimate full day, and included walking, shopping, a casino and tiredness. Some photos, with brief explanation:

Yes, that’s not a joke. Bernard won enough money today to pay for his entire trip πŸ™‚
