Oops, We Did It Again Again!

Saturday, February 8th, 2020

B and I had postcard contests before (read about them here and here) and – after a long hiatus – it was time once again!

There were no set rules, just the usual who could produce the most impressive result. They were both mailed simultaneously to promote independence, and today they arrived.

Once again Bernard defied expectation and submitted not one but three cards. I found these in the mailbox today:

His card selection is clearly fantastic and has an animal theme; one lenticular, one artistic and one incredibly awesome! But the card itself is only half the entry… and here’s the backs:

An explosion of stickers! But what’s the theme? I’ve searched but came up empty. I like the clever reuse of the antique dog/koala card (note the writing under the stickers) and Pac-Man is always appropriate in any situation but I would have liked to see more of a purpose behind the use of these three cards. Plus – let’s be honest here – those printed stamps are worth nothing!

Had I used these particular cards, I may have themed the backs from the front, and decorated them with frog, dog/koala and dingo stickers (and stamps!) exclusively. Possibly I’d have watercoloured the animals and added a few lines of iambic pentameter as well. All good ideas for next years contest…

Which brings me to my entry:

The card itself – showing The 8th Doctor Who – comes from a postcard book AW gave me oodles ago that never fails to deliver just the right card for any occasion! I knew Bernard would treasure it, so I worked hard on the reverse:

It’s tempting to only direct your eye to the lenticular T-Rex stamp and gudetama caviar-sticker embellishments and ignore the 59 Vocaloid stickers I carefully attached with tweezers. But if I did you’d endlessly demand an explanation for that ‘hidden’ message: Hell Of Apes

All I’ll say for now is it was a working title for an Atari 2600 game I’m designing and B is planning on programming. If it ever gets made you can read about it here!

Bernard described my card as “a disturbing lattice of cartoon girls flanked by gibbering egg yolks”, which I think is fancy talk for…

I won πŸ™‚

(Oh, and I wonder if he found the UV ink message I wrote on my card?)

In San Jose

Yesterday I flew cross country…

And found myself here…

And then ran into this fellow…

And I think I’ll stick around a while and have some fun…

Stay tuned… πŸ™‚

Zoffy Update!

Friday, April 12th, 2019

We’ve had little Zoffy for two weeks now and she is settling in well.

About a week ago we let her out of the room she first stayed in and into the entire house. She was a bit nervous at first but in a day or so had finished exploring every conceivable nook and cranny and had claimed the house as hers.

Of course this means she’s now met Emi, and I’m happy to say that while they’re not fast friends yet, there’s no major disagreements between them. Zoffy is more nervous of Emi than vice versa though, and tries to avoid getting too close.

Zoffy is quite tall for a young cat, and one of her tricks is to stand up and look at things like a meerkat! (Yes that’s me napping on the couch…) Look at her cute stubby legs…

She loves lazing on the bed, or even sleeping in the laundry baskets…

But more than anything right now she loves playing with the myriad of toys scattered around. This includes things she shouldn’t touch (such as toys on my work desk!) so I have to keep a close eye on her to make sure she’s not getting into trouble.

She’s very active, very hungry and loves attention so never runs from a pat. The only quirk that I hope she grows out of soon is she is terrified of the TV πŸ™‚

Needless to say she’s filling a void with her cuteness and our smiles πŸ™‚

Introducing Zoffy!

Saturday, March 30th, 2019

Meet Zoffy, the newest member of our family:

Zoffy is seven months old and we adopted her from a rescue agency two days ago. She was found in a junkyard with her mum and three siblings, and rescued when she was only three weeks.

She’s very shy of course, since she suddenly has new parents and a new home. She was housed (at the rescuers home) in a basement even without windows so I’m sure she’s overwhelmed.

But she’s very interested in us, more so all the time, and seems to be becoming comfortable in the bathroom where she will ‘live’ until at least after her first vet visit.

She’s extremely cute with a soft meow and loud purr. Emi is of course insanely curious about her, and sits outside the bathroom meowing a lot. I have a feeling they’ll get along πŸ™‚

I’m sure you’ll see lots more Zoffy on here as the years go by!

Farewell, Beloved Yossie

Friday, February 15th, 2019

Yesterday suddenly and unexpectedly we lost our sweet cat Yossie to a presumed heart attack. She was twelve.

Yossie entered our lives as a rescue cat and she was apparently found by a dumpster. She was tiny and cute and immediately filled our home with her energy.

I bonded with her quickly and she became ‘my’ cat. She was as interested in and comfortable with me as I was her.

She seemed to change overnight from a sleek kitten to a giant cat but she never lost her looks. Everyone that met her commented on how pretty she was, and how expressive her face. I think this was partially because of her ‘mascara’ – the white fur that surrounded her eyes.

Yossie’s been all over this blog her entire life. Most any activity I did she involved herself in, and there’s endless photos of her playing with legos or assisting me with model kits or just resting in my lap while I played games. If I was interested in something, so was she.

She had her own routines as well. Here you see her propping herself up on the wall to wash her belly. She also had a daily ‘follow the sun’ routine where she’d move around the house with the sun shining through the windows. She loved her toys, her treats, and her naps.

Yossie was always gentle and sweet. Never angry, never sad. Always forgiving. Always loving. I’ll never forget her face, and her meows, and how she brightened up my life.

Yossie died in her sleep, curled up on the couch where I usually sit. She looked peaceful, and beautiful. We’re very sad now, because the hole she leaves will not easily fill, but at the same time I know Yossie had a wonderful life and was loved absolutely.

She would often dream while she slept, twitching and quietly meowing. I hope her last dream was a happy one, in which she was having fun with her toys and eating treats and with me – her ‘dad’ – happily by her side πŸ™
