San Diego Zoo

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

It’s been a busy few weeks! But let me rewind a bit, to before school and before Irene, and remind you all I spent a week in San Diego. The next few blog entries will describe that week, and I’m going to start with San Diego Zoo!

I don’t know what the above animal is called, so I will refer to is as a ‘Long Necked Galoot’. It was one of many weird and wonderful animals I beheld on my trip to what is probably the best zoo I have ever visited.

Since I arrived early, I was able to see the usual sedentary beasts, such as Koala’s and Wombat’s, actually being active! These enclosures were not far from the entrance, and were the first start of a nagging theory that formed in my mind…

Not too far down the road I came upon this exhibit, and immediately thought of my mum:

She love’s  meerkats, and she would  love this enclosure with the massive lookout tower for the watchman to sit atop:

DSC04050

He was a lazy sod to be true, watching in name only. He gave no regard to the crowds observing from only a few feet away, and his fellows happily dug close enough to be to be almost grabbed.

DSC04059 DSC04060

Dung beetles and a massive hairy spider! These were in a walkway that led under the enormous elephant enclosure, which looked like this:

DSC04070

The elephants themselves were split by gender, and I had fun watching them waiting for one of them to emerge from her bedroom into the enclosure. Believe me when I say she was in no hurry!

The zoo is massive and built on natural slopes, so it’s quite a strenuous place to walk around for many hours (as I did). Cleverly, they have (free) bus tours that go all around the zoo and give a good view of most animals. I hopped onto these once or twice during my visit.

And here is a gallery of bears!

It’s probably obvious from the shots, but the enclosures are wonderful, and very rarely is the visitor separated from an animal by bars or any other obstruction aside from moats or glass. Here’s one rare example:

DSC04088

When I was standing there the male put his head back and lazily roared. It was frightening and very, very loud. Lots of kids had a real scream and giggle afterwards 🙂

One of the absolute highlights of the trip was the tiger feeding. Mum and her two babies were being tossed full steaks (probably sliced galoot, to be true) and enjoying it mightily. They put on a good show for the massive crowd:

DSC04124

I managed to get some decent video, which you can see here:

Another highlight was the human-feeding. I got a good shot of that as well:

Capybara madness!

People keep these guys as pets you know? 🙂

By the time I rode the ‘skyfari’ I was pretty sure something fishy was going on. San Diego zoo was very reminiscent of Taronga, in many ways. On my second skyfari ride I rode with an employee, and she told me the zoo has a close relationship with Taronga, which I think explains why.

These photos on scrape the surface of what is a massive zoo with a vast variety of animals to see and truly beautiful landscaping. If you’re ever in the city, consider this #1 on your places to visit!

Testing iPad Blogging

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

This is simply a test of blogging from the iPad, which has up to now been difficult.

I’m also adding a nifty photo of a real (and clever) custom-painted MTG card I found online:

The test ends here.

A (No Longer) Brief Post, Before My Trip

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Yesterday I went to the Altamont fair with SFL. We got their before the midway opened, and started by checking out the animals:

DSC03989

That’s a photo of a brand new Doctor and a goose! The lemonade cost $5 with $3 refills, which we did three times. We both figured the lemonade carney was mad at the fact we actually carried the cup around so long.

This was the brand new ride at the fair, called The Stinger. This shot was taken when they were testing it before the midway officially opened:

DSC03975

With a stunning mix of bravado and foolishness, I rode the above ride. Here is a video of the entire experience (watch for my reaction at the end):

If you couldn’t see the video, here is a hint as to the effect The Stinger had on me:

DSC03986

Check out these art panels on the front of a very, very bad ‘haunted house’ type ride:

DSC03977 DSC03976

Nothing to do with haunting I know, but ultra-cool nonetheless.

After some time I had somewhat recovered from The Stinger, and we chose to go on a very mild looking thing called Avalanche (which we dubbed ‘Glacial Forest’). Basically you sit as seen in the picture and it goes around and around… how bad could it be?

DSC03997

All I’ll say is I was slightly relieved that SFL, too, got terribly nauseated by the above ride since if it had been only me I would have felt like an old man indeed 🙂

The day was very hot and we were there slightly over eight hours (time flew)! The fair seemed bigger than last year with a great deal of things to see, especially animals. Including beyond the usual – such as Kangaroos, bears and even coatimundi!

Oh, and I had my first ever taste of fried dough, which was delicious!

DSC03999

All told a very fun day, even if The Stinger absolutely ruined me for… almost 40 hours and counting so far 🙂

Later today I shall go to San Diego for SPIE. I will not have internet, so no blogging, but you can follow me on twitter.

The Next Three Months

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

DS-620x

I rarely talk about my (school)work on this blog, but today I’m making an exception.

This Thursday I’m heading over to San Diego to attend the SPIE Optics and Photonics conference. I have a paper in the conference, and will be giving a presentation on Monday the 22nd. The title of my paper is “Modeling Polycapillaries: Comparison between Simulation and Experimental Results”, and it concerns itself with the results of the polycapillary computer simulation that I have been coding (on and off) since 2002.

This work is finally coming to an end, since I intend to complete my PhD thesis and defend it (ie. graduate with my PhD) during this upcoming semester. This is not a lofty goal since I am more than half done with the writing (I’ve written about 65 pages in the last 3 months), but it will be a difficult goal because of the balance of my responsibilities.

During this upcoming semester I will be teaching again (a class of 135) as well as teaching a discussion group (class of 34). In addition I will be administering all of the (14) discussion groups as well as all of the (19) lab classes. This is a lot of work; more than I have ever taken on in a semester. Running everything to the usual level of perfection I strive for and finishing my thesis will likely keep me busier than I have ever been.

Truthfully it’s enough to get me down if I think about it. But I’m trying to keep my eye on the goal and take it one step at a time and know that once it is all done I can take a great big vacation and say to myself “Job well done!”

Dragon Week: WTF

Friday, August 12th, 2011

And so we come to those dated and quaint adverts that are not easily categorized. The ones that not only would never be seen today, but must have been astonishing even in their time. Such as this:

fri 1

It’s not easy to even describe what that is! A weird abacus-y thing for AD&D timekeeping? How on earth could there have ever been a market for this?

But wait! If the above is of questionable use, how about this guy:

fri 6

Since this was 30 years ago, I just know that ‘walnut finish’ was contact vinyl!

What about these two ads for a service that no-one that has ever lived on Earth has ever needed:

fri 9 fri876

And if you are in the business of paying for your character, why not pay for the whole thing:

fri 10

I think as far as KLS is concerned the above is the most heinous ad of them all. $2 per minute to have some dude read out character stats? That’s so morally questionable it must be criminal.

Let’s change tack just a bit with a nice double-advert:

fri 3

The electronic dice machine is just a figment of its era, but those book covers are fantastic! My guess is they were intended for the AD&D manuals, but wouldn’t they look flash on my textbooks today? 🙂

Fancy some arts and crafts:

fri33

They don’t mention the kit comes with free lead poisoning! (Not a joke btw, home-casting used to use lead until it was banned, and even then hobbyists melted down shotgun buckshot to keep making figures until that too was banned from using lead.)

Another for the home craftsman:

fri1

How evocative is this: the above address is in Albany, NY. I love to imagine that somewhere in this city there resides a warehouse filled with crates full of unsold Red Dragons Of Krynn. If I ever find them, I will be sure to get one for each of you!

And while you assemble it, how about some appropriate music:

fri 2

That, my friends, is IT! That’s the craziest ad I have yet seen in a Dragon. I just know the dude in the horned helm is Ramal LaMarr who desperately wanted to be Prince but failed but it didn’t matter because he ended up with a (scary) harem anyway. I wonder how many AD&D games were played to his soulful tunes (as opposed to Iron Maiden or prog rock)?

So if that is the craziest, what’s left? Well here’s the worst:

fri 8

Words fail me…

And here is the best:

fri

The above ad hurts my soul. As I said to KLS, “This is the closest I will ever have to owning this game.” Which leads me to a sad and horrible tale…

It was X years ago, in Rochester, NY, at a game store then known as Crazy Egors. In a large and mostly abandoned pile of board games in the back of the cavernous store, I was astounded to see the above advertised game. It was in remarkable condition (as far as I could tell) and was an original from 198X. For reasons that to this day baffle me I never purchased it, and it’s no exaggeration to say that ever since that fateful day I the last thing I think of before sleeping each night is how foolish that decision was…

And so Dragon Week draws to a close. Rest assured I am still reading the mag, and if any truly spectacular ads turn up I will be sure to share them with you. But for now, I hope you have enjoyed the last five days of posts.

I shall leave with not an advertisement, but an announcement of a very special event. If my memory hasn’t failed me, I have a suspicion AW may be able to tell us more about this event in a comment…
