Video City

In 1983 Topps released a set of trading cards based on popular video games of the era. Here’s an advert:

As it turns out, two of the games mentioned in the marketing – Centipede and Q-Bert – were not even in the final set, called Video City. Here’s the single unopened pack I recently purchased for about $8:

It was in remarkably good condition considering the age, and the wax seal was also unbroken. When I opened it, I was pleased to see the stick of gum hadn’t adhered to any of the cards. Wherever they’d been, they were stored well!

Each pack contains 3 scratch-off game cards like these:

The instructions are on the back:

The packs also contain three sheets of stickers:

The game cards are lacklustre, but I’m very impressed with how vibrant the stickers are. They’d look great on postcards…

There were several video game themed trading card sets in the early 80s, including Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Dragons Lair (!) and Zelda. Although released by a few different companies they mostly all followed the same format of stickers and game cards. I’ve been trying to get a pack of some of these sets (especially Dragon’s Lair) a while with no luck. If you ever see one, keep me in mind 🙂

Cracker Nights

This past weekend we had four nights of fireworks. It was fantastic 🙂

We had an irresponsibly large amount of crackers – the above shot was Saturday nights haul only – running the gamut from tiny little things (‘crazy jacks’) to massive fountains that ran for over 3 minutes. We had also driven to Pennsylvania to buy some launchers, which are not legal in NY state.

It took hours to set them all off – over four nights – and we still have more left! Others were doing the same, and the noises of booms and crackles were heard around. Even so we may have upset the neighbour slightly, since we thought they yelled at us after we set off a particularly loud and bombastic launcher!

By the third day I was up to my usual tricks, slightly ‘modifying’ the fireworks for dramatic effect. Here’s 15 little guys I taped into 5 groups of 3 and lit simultaneously for a large group explosion:

A lovely photo of the ‘Coral Reef’ in action, which we all agreed was the most magnificent fountain (and which cost $50!):

Here’s a video of one of the more boistrous fountains going off. I’ll admit i was a bit scared during this tumult, since I didn’t know what it would do (true for all the fireworks; the descriptions on the packaging are vague enough to be useless) and found myself standing perhaps a little too close:

And lastly, a video I made on my phone editing together highlights from many of the different types we lit:

As you can tell, much fun was had by all 🙂

Endless Summer

My summer course began on the first day of summer, and while not even half way through it’s draining me like it always does.

I wake up, spend all morning preparing, teach for 2.5 hours, do an hour or more (in yesterdays case, four) of office hours, then come home and fight hard to not snooze on the couch watching classic Star Trek. That’s my day, every day.

But I love it, as I always do.

That said I’m looking forward to this long weekend, so I can maybe sleep in a little, not shave every day and light hundreds of fireworks.

And no, I’m not exaggerating on that last number 😉
