D-War

So we just saw D-War at the movies…

…before you continue, please go and watch the trailer

…ok, so we saw this film last night.

DragonWars-Poster.jpg < Snakes Alive! Holy God was it awful great!

The basic story is this: very bad dragon smashes up Los Angeles looking for Korean princess to get power to become a God. Sounds simplistic I know, and in the hands of a lesser director it may have been. But Shim Hyung-Rae (the film is Korean) is clearly an amateur auteur, and, working from a ludicrous masterful script, crafted a truly unique film that had both KLS and I laughing uncontrollably entranced until the last shot.

The diabolical brilliant acting trumpeted belied the fact that most of the cast were unknowns. It is perhaps indicative of how completely I was swept away by their performances that I could almost hear myself as the characters delivered such lines as “I can’t believe this is happening!“, or “This is insane!

The battle scenes in Los Angeles were so spectacular they had young children wandering dazed in the aisles of the cinema. The final battle was so gripping we were not even distracted by the snoring of nearby patrons. And – bless my soul – the emotional goodbye between hero and dragon at the very end was a celluloid reflection of similar tears of self-loathing that I had wasted $20 that streamed down my own face at the same moment.

Rarely, and I mean this sincerely, rarely does one get the chance to see such an effluvial astounding film on the big screen. D-War is truly a film that puts the ‘S’ in ‘Soporific’ ‘Sensational’, and unquestionably one of the single worst best films I have ever seen.

Take my word for it and punish treat yourself: I honestly believe that you will loathe love Dragon Wars as much as I did.

Irresistable

There’s a very good Korean film named A Tale Of Two Sisters which I highly recommend. Strangely, considering the amount of striking imagery in the film, once scene which stuck in my mind was that of a young girl eating the fruit of Physalis, or Chinese Lantern Plant.

It seems, if the fruits are left undisturbed for long enough, they dry out and the ‘lanterns’ can be removed and the insides eaten. I read that they are sweet. I have never tasted them myself.

We have a single lantern plant, small and seemingly vulnerable, and it has brazenly shone one brilliant red lantern for several weeks now. It was quite beautiful, especially against the brown and greens of the garden. I looked forward to seeing what happened to the fruit as the plant ‘died off’ for the winter.

I’ll not know this year, for today that single fruit – which had survived several windstorms and the recent monsoonal rains – was the target of what I assume to be a curious squirrel or chipmunk:

1.jpg 2.jpg < Evidence You can see, in the leftmost picture, the reddish stalk from which hung the lantern, and the remains abandoned on the ground below. The detail on the right shows how the exterior was torn away (and not eaten; a few centimeters away the removed piece was found) and the fruit inside half nibbled away. The plant is invasive and we expect to put a few more in next year. Likely it was this first rodent's taste of physalis. Assuming it tasted good, I doubt it will be his last.

PS3

We bought a Playstation 3.

I still think it’s overpriced (and that does not mean I don’t think it’s good value), and seriously lacking in good games. Hence our decision to buy the system and no games! Neither did we buy any Blu-Ray movies, the other major use of the device!

I have to say though, we’ve sortof fallen in love with it. The HD graphics look spectacular on our TV, and it’s going to be a delight watching movies in high-res.

The bottom line for me right now, though, is Super Stardust HD, one of the three games I downloaded for the system from PSN (The Playstation Network). $9.99 bought me one of the very best ‘arena’ shooters I have ever, ever played. And the amazing graphics, particle effects and abundance of objects on the screen are only icing on the sweet shooter cake.

Check out a video of the game here.

The first game I will buy will likely be Ratchet & Clank when it comes out in 6 weeks or so.

Not that I’m starved for games right now. In addition to oodles of portable games (including the colossal Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for PSP), I’m deep into Metroid Prime 3 for Wii, which is just spectacular.

The next post will not be about games!
