Puzzle Games & Dragon Games

Last year my gaming habit seemed to decline noticeably, with 15+ year lows in both the number of games purchased and the total dollars spent. Has that trend continued? Let’s find out…

In 2013 I purchased only 50 games. This was the first time since 1994 that my average had dropped below a game a week. Given I now include iOS purchases in my data, this is significant. The fact is I am simply not buying as many games as I used to, and I doubt I will ever return to the early 2000’s when I was purchasing an average of 2+ games a week.

Despite buying fewer games in total, my dollars spent increased about 20% from last year to about $1300, or an average of about $26 a game. This was a more than 60% increase on the amount spent per game since last year, almost entirely due to my decline in iOS spending in the last year.

Here are the plots:

The above is a percentage breakdown of games per system. I’ve included the 6 months of World of Warcraft subscription as one purchase for Macintosh. Comparing to last year the decline in iOS games downloaded is notable. This is for two reasons: I download fewer iOS games, and I don’t track free game downloads. If you’re not following the iOS gaming scene, free-to-play is fast becoming the norm.

Above is the percentage breakdown of dollars spent per system. Obviously iOS amounts to very little since the games are rarely more than a dollar or two. The 3DS dominates this list, both because of the high amount of purchases and the $40 price point for games.

The trends this year were:
1) More dollars spend on PS3 and 3DS
2) Fewer dollars spent on PSP and DS (both are ‘dead’ systems now and may disappear from these lists next year)
3) A sharp decline in total iOS games and total iOS spending

What the charts do not show is how much time I spend gaming, and I truly wish there was a way to measure that. My feeling is despite the downward trend of purchases, I don’t spend significantly less of my free time (and that’s key) gaming. I may game less overall due to the increase in work responsibilities and vacations (I’ll spend about 6 weeks away from home on vacation this year), but when I’m home I still play a lot. Actually, I play even away from home, and you’ll see why in a moment…

There was also the fact that 2013 was a year with several ‘epic’ games, by which I mean games that kept my attention for very long periods. These included World Of Warcraft, Monster Hunter 3U, Dragon’s Dogma, Pokemon X, Tales of Graces f and my game of the year (below). Indeed, some of these (especially Monster Hunter or Pokemon) I could have just kept playing but put aside to devote time to other games.

So onto the lists! As with last year, let’s start with the biggest disappointments in reverse order:

3) New Super Mario Brothers U (Wii U) – Come on Nintendo, it’s like you’re not trying. Just as the 3DS game from last year was a disappointment, so too was this Wii U game. It’s not a bad game – in fact it’s actually quite good. But as a Nintendo game, and a Mario game, and as a game that desperately needs to sell a failing system to consumers, this simply wasn’t good enough. And it certainly wasn’t as good as it could have been. Let’s hope they have remedied the situation with the recently released Super Mario 3D Land for Wii U (which I hope I get for Christmas)

2) Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) – Farming the sequel of a beloved game to a third-party isn’t a great idea to start with, but that’s not the real issue here. The problem with this graphically excellent and technically impressive showcase of the 3DS is that it lacks any sort of a soul, and becomes more of a ‘checklist simulator’ than a game. I loved this the first few levels, and hated it the last few. It wasn’t half the game Luigi’s Mansion was.

1) Goat Up 2 (iOS) – Again, not a bad game. In fact it’s quite a good game, and a fun spiritual throwback to the C64 days of yore. But it was disappointing for two reasons: i) It’s not as good as Goat Up and ii) It’s apparently Minter’s last iOS game. Boo hoo. I played this one for an hour maybe. I played Goat Up for at least ten times that.

So what were my favourites of the year? Well in a year of truly great games three stood above all others and gave me hundreds of hours of fun. In reverse order:

3) Dragon’s Dogma (Ps3) – This was the game in which Japanese developers tried to ‘out Skyrim Skyrim’ and in my opinion they succeeded. A massive open world RPG with complex battle systems, a fascinating story and – honestly – almost unbelievably good graphics (watch that video!). This had been out for ages when I bought it (for about $15!) and I was just amazed by how good it was and how much I enjoyed it.

2) Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS and Wii U) – A game that deserves the ultimate in it’s name. The biggest and by far the best MH game yet delivered in spades and when I finally put it aside I’d spent over 300 hours playing between my 3DS and Wii U (since the game allowed for save file transfer to play on the small or big screen). The online multiplay in particular was amazing, especially when you got into a group of skilled players and worked together to defeat one of the mega-bosses like Dire Miralis or a Stygian Zinogre (as in the above video).

1) Puzzle and Dragons iOS (iOS) – Yes, you read that correctly. A free iOS puzzle game is what I consider the game of the year. I can just hear Florence shaking her head in disgust! I was aware of this game before our Japan trip, but didn’t know quite how popular it was over there. I have since learned that ten percent of Japanese people play ‘PazuDora’ and I believe it: everywhere I saw people playing it, especially on trains. I downloaded it during our trip and… well today was my 200th consecutive login day! You can see from the video this is more than a match-3, since it involves monster collection, team building and a lot of skill making matches during the rounds (the player in the video is no amateur!). The game starts easy but quickly becomes very, very complex and in addition to it being fun I enjoy the challenge of team-building and beating the often very difficult ‘descend’ dungeons. I don’t see myself giving up on this game any time soon either. It’s as far as I am concerned, the ultimate phone game 🙂

The Great Thanksgiving Atari Tournament!

Some months ago, a Vectrex tournament was held. KLS demonstrated wild skills to win that one easily, so it was time for a rematch. This time, we would play this:

The players would be the same: Jim, KLS and myself. The rules were simple: we’d play every single game on the system that was single player and had a score. Only one go at each game, with winner of previous game going first (since this was a disadvantage). The highest score in every game would take a point.

The action was nonstop and relentless, and the competition was fierce. Since we’re all old, we remembered some of the games as if we had played them yesterday. But of course we hadn’t, and we were bad. More so at some than others.

The graphics and sound occasionally left us slackjawed in disbelief, but our spirits of competition were high. The fact that many games had not been reprogrammed for joystick and were virtually unplayable since we lacked a paddle controller was irrelevant: we played on!

All told we played 29 different games over two days. The flashback system emulates games from various Atari consoles (the above is, I believe, the 7800 Space Invaders for instance) meant we were jumping generations every other game. It was a thrill-a-minute ride.

And then we were done, and it was time to tally the scores. Without further ado, the final results:

16 wins – RS
10 wins – KLS
5 wins – JBF

Amazing! Finally I have regained the crown of ultimate gamer from my wife 🙂

You may note that the final score includes 31 wins from 29 games. How is this possible? There were actually two ties, and in that case both were given the win. In fact I spent quite some time analyzing the scores with the help of Numbers (the Apple spreadsheet app) on my iPhone, and I can present some more in depth results.

Yes, I did score 100% of the total score in Desert Falcon, since my measly 700 points beat Jim and KLS’s 0 points 🙂

These TV game systems can be a bit of an iffy proposition these days, but in my opinion take on a whole new appeal when used for a tournament. I already look forward to the next, which is planned for about a month for now in Casa Williams where I will defend my crown against AW and BS 🙂

Electric Eye (aka. Wildlife Camera Once Again!)

It’s time once again for a roundup of the latest animals snaps from our wildlife camera. I left it next to our front porch for a week or so, and then on the back patio looking at the house until the SD card filled up. Of the 753 photos it snapped, about 40 had animals on them. In these highlight photos, the time will be wrong but the temperature should be correct.

It’s a bit blurry, and therefore I can’t say with absolute certainty, but I think the above is a skunk.

That’s a chipmunk! If you can’t see it, look closely just to the right of where the electrical cord reaches the ground. Chipmunks are absolute buggers to catch on this camera, since they run at the speed of light. But we believe we have a chipmunk megalopolis under our house, and it was only a matter of time before I got a shot of one. Wish it was clearer though…

Now that is a mystery. Obviously mammal, with soft cuddle fur, cute short ears and a curious demeanor? My vote is either a lion or bear cub. Sadly no other snaps of this elusive beast were to be seen, so for now I’m filing it in the ‘crypto’ category.

That’s a hare. Or maybe a jackrabbit. Or perhaps just a rabbit. Either way, it’s cute and has short ears and I’m a bit surprised it’s still up and about in the freezing nights. Rabbits are very common in our backyard, and this year we were treated to a baby that we watched grow up over a period of months. I think they have a rabbit hole under the ferns that grow at the back of our yard.

The once-elusive possum is hidden no longer! There were dozens of snaps of this guy, over a period of about two weeks (always at night). I guess he likes prowling our back patio.

No matter where or when you put the camera, there will always be more squirrel photos than of anything else! This one was my favourite, showing as it does the squirrel critiquing the angle at which I have placed the camera. Or possibly trying to establish the field of view so he could set himself up best for a shot? Look how warm and thick his fur coat looks! I love our squirrels 🙂

As My Brother Requested, A List Of What He Could Buy Me For Christmas

Did you notice the blog was down for about a week? I received the following missive from my brother explaining the absence:

“Dearest secondborn, it pains me to admit I forsook the required blog maintenance due to an abundance of stress that resulted from an inability to find Christmas gifts of a level high enough to show you the appreciation that you deserve. Pray tell, could you help as you have done in years past?”

Lest you think this is fake, his telegram didn’t include the hyperlinks. Those were my additions 🙂

It would be positively bestial of me to ignore such a cry for help, and thus I present – once again – a humble list of items that I would love to unwrap on that most special of days…

“I Am The Doctor” – Jon Pertwee

This was Jon Pertwee’s last biography, and apparently is a smashing read, containing many and varied anecdotes about his life during and after the time he portrayed what everyone agrees is the best ever Doctor Who. For me, this book would essentially be a ‘how to’ that I could apply to living all aspects of my life.

Manual Of The Planes (1st Edition)

It’s possible I have one of the most complete AD&D 1E collections out there, since I have no less than fifteen different hardcover manuals including such esoterica as The Wilderness Survival Guide and Dragonlance Adventures. And yet the original edition of the Manual Of The Planes has yet avoided my ‘ever-expanding web of acquisition’ (a somewhat obscure AD&D magic item). Of course I have the 3E version, as well as other planar guides, but in the name of completeness I must have the above! If I were to live within driving range of a fabulous used book store that sells D&D manuals then I’d probably drive over there and see if they had this one in stock to buy and give me for Christmas……

Neo-Otyugh figure

This is one of those things that most of you would instantly ignore if you ever saw it in a store. Me? I’d buy it! As my brother will, to brighten my Weihnachten! Of course he’d have to find it first, which is no mean feat since it’s one of the less common figures in a figure line that failed miserably more than 20 years ago. Plus it’s a bendable figure, which means it was made in China out of some no doubt toxic rubber that after all this time has probably dissolved into poisonous gas. I guess I’ll find out on Christmas Day 😉

This one’s been on this list before, and I’ve wanted it for years now. As availability evaporates, so too does the price continue to rise. In Japan earlier this year I fully intended to buy this; I was even prepared to pay an unreasonable amount for it. But I never saw it. I looked everywhere for it. I even took a solo trip to Akihabara and explored every figure shop I could find. It beggars belief that I never found it, because where else on Earth would this be available? I’ll tell you where: the place Bernard finds it. And buys it. For me. For Christmas.

Who Is The Doctor – Jon Pertwee (7″ single)

This one’s been on my list for a while, for several reasons:
i) It’s sung by the person everyone agrees played the best Doctor, Jon Pertwee.
ii) It’s very, very good. Actually it’s even better.
iii) I still have a working and connected record player downstairs, and could therefore dance to it with Yossie.

Dalek Attack LCD game

It’s difficult to use the English language to even describe why I would want the above, so let’s use German: Der Grund hierfür ist, dass ich ein besessener Sammler bin und wollte diese, seit ich ein Sprössling war. I reckon Bernard’s going to have to use some sort of supernatural power to actually obtain one though, since I’ve never ever seen it, nor seen it for sale, or even know if it exists. This is the sort of item that makes the quest that is Christmas shopping so grand, and I am almost jealous of my brother that I have now given him the joy of finding this gem.

Zelda Game-&-Watch

I’ve actually seen the above product, more than once, always in Japan. Every time I beheld it I wept, for two reasons. Firstly, because I wanted to own it that badly, and secondly because the price literally brought tears to my eyes. Especially for a mint-in-boxed version, which is of course the one I would want. Once, when only I was present and no-one else could have possibly heard him, my brother said: “No item is too expensive at Christmas!” Approximately 41 days from today, I’ll see if he remembers those words.

Sword & The Sorceror

This was released quite a few years ago in the US, but it’s all-but-unavailable now. Which is a shame, because I want it! I religiously check amazon for reissues, and even went so far as to buy a bootleg ripped-from-VHS version at NYCC (which didn’t work). Those of you that have seen this dreadful film may wonder why the obsession with seeing it again, and I may not be able to easily answer. Until Christmas day 😉

Snow Brothers (Game Boy)

Picture this: you’re in a used game shop, perusing the ancient Game Boy cartridges. Your eyes fall on the above, and what do you do? I reckon nothing. You’d barely even notice it as you scanned the titles. You almost certainly wouldn’t know you were looking at $200 of plastic and microchips would you? I would, and I’d eagerly rip out my wallet and buy the little sucker.

Of course the above story is pure fiction, since it would never ever, EVER happen. I know because – for twenty goddamn years now – I have scanned game boy cartridges in used game stores and have never seen Snow Brothers.

It warms my heart to think that my brother, as he drives around to every single game store within 5 hours of his house, actually will find Snow Brothers. And he’ll buy it for a song. And I’ll sing the same song when I open it on Christmas Day: “To taste the secret sauce of life”!

Might & Magic Games (SNES)

These are the gifts that, as I open them on Christmas day, will cause me to say aloud “He didn’t!” While I wouldn’t put anything beyond my brother – especially where it involves brightening my Christmas – the organization, acquisition and innovation required to obtain both Super Nintendo Might and Magic cartridges and give them to me in one gift box would be no less than godlike. Lest you find my words hyperbolic, know that Might And Magic 2 is Japanese only, and despite fervent searching throughout all five of my Japanese trips I have never seen it, and that the second was released in very small quantities and is very difficult to find boxed these days.

As an aside, I have played M&M3 SNES. Back in my fanzine days, FCI sent me a pre-release EPROM with the game on it, that I stuck into my SNES and played. It is one of my regrets that I ever returned that to the company…

Atari Lynx + Gauntlet Third Encounter

aka ‘The One That Got Away’. As with every other human on this planet, I cared less about the Lynx back when it was released in 1989. By the time I got to America it had failed spectacularly, and by the time I started collecting games in early 1994 it had disappeared from stores. These days working versions fetch high prices, much more-so if they are boxed. This is interesting since it was a crap system with crap games… except for Gauntlet: The Third Encounter.

I want a Lynx. I have wanted one for years, and have come close to buying one once or twice. What has held me back was the fact I have essentially no interest in any games for it except for Gauntlet, which means I’d be paying what is now around $300 for something I’d never used. Furthermore, Gauntlet itself is quite rare, and the Lynx + Gauntlet combo (boxed) could be upwards of $500. If you could even find either.

So Bernard, as you spend every weekend between now and Christmas driving the length and breadth of California in the almost-certainly-futile search for a Snow Brothers game boy cartridge, remember me if you spot a cheap Lynx + Gauntlet Third Encounter combo 😉

Doctor Who Pinball Machine

For a few years now I have seriously entertained the idea of buying a pinball machine. I did some research, and very quickly the above bubbled to the top of my list. It was released in 1992, it’s beautiful, it’s very complex, and it would look marvelous in my house.

The machines don’t seem that difficult to find, as long as you can somehow arrange shipping (Bernard could I’m sure) and have more money than sense (…). If nothing else, the thought of how beautiful the cabinet would look reflecting the lights of our tree moments after I unwrapped it surely moves even the most miserly of souls? This is truly a gift that would enable the recipient to fully enjoy the ‘secret sauce’ of life!
